Winter is here…and so is a new book!

Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! and oh crap, it’s winter!

Just a heads up as to what is happening this month.

War God Blues, sequel to Duty Calls is available for pre-order at the discounted price of 99 cents. It will be released on December 29 for Kindle.

This is a limited time offer. It will be going up to the regular price of $3.99 on December 30th, so act now.

In addition, there will be a 5.5 x 8.5 inch trade paperback version and an “old school” mass market paperback (4.25 x 6.75 inches) that you can really put in your pocket if you like. I’ve missed those old paperbacks and I want all of my books to be available in that format.

I’ve also updated my website

Finally, I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and a happy and prosperous new year.

Royalty Rates…for those that might be interested

We had a great, if not so well attended panel at Libcon here in Tulsa yesterday. It was on the basic 101 of Epublishing.

We started drifting into the royalty rates for self-publishing your work on Amazon and other e-book outlets. We were able to share that at price points over $2.99 you could get up to 70% royalty on every ebook sale with The discussion drifted into royalties on more traditional publishing venues and honestly, it had been so long I really didn’t even remember. I don’t even know what we currently make with 47North on Pirates of the Outrigger rift, (which Gary pointed out I couldn’t say anyway per contract.)

In any event, I am very safe in pointing out that it is MUCH LOWER. It is all variable by contract. The publishers vary and the cache of the author varies. Here is a not too far off answer to that question provided by the website linked below:

The Business of Publishing

Q. How much is the typical royalty percentage paid by a New York publisher?

A. The key word in your question is “typical.” There are exceptions to everything, and there may be variability from one publishing house (or contract) to another, but here are some guidelines.

Typically, an author can expect to receive the following royalties:
Hardback edition: 10% of the retail price on the first 5,000 copies; 12.5% for the next 5,000 copies sold, then 15% for all further copies sold.

Paperback: 8% of retail price on the first 150,000 copies sold, then 10% thereafter.

Exceptions to the above include sales to warehouse clubs (like Costco or Sam’s Club), book clubs, and special orders; the royalty percentages for these can be half the figures listed above.

Update: eBook royalties through traditional New York publishers are 25%. They should be higher because the publisher does not have the typical costs of printing, binding, warehousing, shipping, etc. that they have with a bound book. Some digital publishers offer royalties at or near 50%.

Pirates of the Outrigger Rift

I don’t generally google myself, and when I do I remember to wash my hands afterwards….BUT…  I got to looking for review of pirates and I found a ton of them on Goodreads.  Sure, it’s a space adventure and that isn’t some folks cup of tea, but I really think Gary and I hit the nail on the head for those folks who enjoy a fun romp.  Here are some examples:

“I must say, if I had the time and the bladder control I would have read this book cover to cover in one sitting instead of the couple of weeks I ended up taking to read it. But oh lord was this novel a ride. I loved every word in every single chapter, and this is definitely a book I will likely revisit in a few years just for the pleasure of reading it….”

“The simplest way to say it, is that Pirates of Outrigger Rift is a fun read. If you enjoy space pirates, dirty corporations, and drunken starship pilots, you’ll probably enjoy it. I certainly did. It has a nice balance of action, intrigue, humor, and even a little romance….”

“I love the characters in this book. It reminded me of Eighties SciFi in the style of old Westerns. The characters were lovable, or eminently hate-able as the case may be, and the plot is engaging and keeps you guessing. I could read another two or three books with Sai, Elsa and what’s-his-name? The drunk dude. No kiddin’….”

Mike Hammer the ORIGINAL series

Y’all are going to think I am crazy….crazier, that is.

I stumbled upon the original Mike Hammer TV show from circa 1957. The Mickey Spillane tough guy is played by done other that…DARREN MCGAVIN! Yep, same dude who play Kolchak the Night Stalker and the grumbly dad in Christmas Story.

And guess what? He ROCKS it.

More of you are likely family with the Stacy Keach version of Hammer from the 1980’s. I liked that show quite a bit. But McGavin is actually my favorite Hammer, now. How can the diminutive actor pull it off? Pure bravado and badassery. He nails it completely. Attitude, humor etc. Not exactly up to modern standards for women’s social issues due to the general media trends at the time to have every woman on camera for eye candy, but…it WAS the 50’s so don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater. The show is great for all the smoking while doing EVERYTHING and chasing everything in a skirt including confused Scotsmen.

I think there are 79 episodes of 30 minutes each. That was only 2 year’s worth, believe it or not…they worked their butts off as far as writing and production went. One of the principle writers was the famous Frank Kane who was masterful and engineering the 30 minutes mysteries into entertaining drama. Kane also was the author behind the Johnny Liddell detective character and wrote 30 books and 400 odd short stories.

Anyway, there are a few episodes available for free on youtube or you can get the entire series used for about 20 bucks on…worth every cent.

Calling for Reviewers!

I recently completed Duty Calls: The Reluctant War God Book 1, and I am heavily involved in the writing of the second book, War God Blues.

I plan on releasing Duty Calls when the first draft on War God Blues is completed. At that time I would like to quote a few reviews and hopefully have a few folks who liked the book get on Amazon and quickly add some online reviews to help promote the book.

To this end, I am offering PDF format ARC’s (Advance Review Copies) of Duty Calls.

Please contact me via email and I will send you the ARC in reply. I plan on finishing the next book soon and hope to have Duty Calls on sale soon, so please act now.
